EV CHARGING KNOWLEDGE

Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3

Selecting the Appropriate Public Charging Level for Your Electric Vehicle

There are three standard levels of charging available for electric cars.

Level 1 and Level 2 stations are suitable for charging all electric cars and provide similar charging power. Level 3 charging stations are significantly more powerful than Level 1 and Level 2 stations.

Level 3 chargers, also known as DCFC or fast charging stations, allow for a considerably longer charge at a quicker rate. However, it’s important to note that not all vehicles can be charged at Level 3 chargers.

Therefore, understanding your vehicle’s capabilities is crucial.

Level 1

Level 1 charging operates on a standard 120-volt wall outlet. It is the slowest charging level, taking several hours to fully charge a plug-in hybrid and tens of hours to fully charge a 100% electric vehicle.

Most commonly used by EV owners who primarily charge their vehicles at home.

Level 2

Level 2 charging utilizes the common EV plug that is commonly found in homes and garages. It is also the standard for most public charging stations. Additionally, RV plugs, specifically those with a 14-50 configuration, are also categorized as level 2 chargers.
Most commonly found in homes, garages, and many public charging stations.

Level 3

Level 3 public charging stations, also known as DCFC or DC Fast Chargers, provide the fastest charging speed for vehicles. However, it’s important to note that not all electric vehicles are compatible with level 3 chargers. Optimal charging efficiency for a DCFC station is achieved when your battery’s state-of-charge (SOC) is below 80%. After reaching this threshold, the charging speed significantly decreases. Therefore, it is recommended to switch to a level 2 charger once you reach 80% charge. The final 20% of charging is equally fast with a level 2 station as it is with a level 3, while being more cost-effective.

Most commonly designed to meet the demands of fast-charging scenarios, making them ideal for specific use cases like fleet operations, military branches, high-demand locations, long-distance travel, and various commercial and industrial applications.
